Smart Film FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Every question below comes up regularly in our showrooms.

1. Does smart film need power all the time?

Only to stay clear. Unpowered, the film rests in its opaque (private) state. When switched on it draws less than 5 watts per square metre — trivial on a power bill.

2. What happens during a blackout?

The glass turns opaque automatically. Privacy is the fail-safe state, which is exactly what you want for a bathroom or meeting room.

3. How fast does it switch?

Under 30 milliseconds — faster than you can blink.

4. Is the opaque mode fully private?

Yes for visual privacy: haze is 95% or higher, so shapes and detail can't be made out. Light still passes through, keeping the room bright.

5. Can smart film be installed on existing windows?

Yes — that's the main advantage of the self-adhesive version. It applies to the indoor face of existing glass. It won't bond correctly to polycarbonate or acrylic, and it's not suited to positions in prolonged direct sunlight.

6. Can I install smart film myself?

We don't recommend it, and here's the honest reason: PDLC film is designed for a single application. It can't be repositioned once placed, it must be cut with precision equipment (hand-cutting voids the product guarantee), and it needs correct low-voltage wiring for even switching. Professional installation exists to protect your investment, not to add margin.

7. Why does smart film sometimes look foggy in clear mode?

Usually one of three things: an undersized or incorrect transformer (low output voltage), strong backlighting relative to the viewing side, or viewing at a very sharp angle. On large panels, wiring only one end can also cause slightly uneven clarity — wiring both ends fixes it. All of these are avoidable with correct specification and installation.

8. What causes bubbles, and can they be fixed?

Bubbles almost always trace back to dust or residue on the glass during application — which is why installers spend more time cleaning glass than laying film. Minor edge bubbles are worked out during installation; trapped dust requires lifting and re-laying that section immediately, which is only possible during the install itself.

9. Can it be used as a projector screen?

Yes. In opaque mode the film is an excellent high-definition rear-projection surface — a boardroom wall becomes a presentation screen, and a shop window becomes an after-hours display.

10. Does it block UV?

Over 99% of UV and about 98% of infrared — meaningful protection for furniture, artwork and flooring against fading, plus reduced heat gain.

11. How long does smart film last?

Quality PDLC film is rated for 15+ years and more than 2 million switching cycles. Longevity depends on correct installation: neutral-cure silicone sealants only (acid-cure silicone destroys the film), busbars kept clear of metal frames, and the right transformer.

12. How is it controlled?

Take your pick: wall switch, remote, smartphone app, voice assistant, or automation — including a magnetic door switch that makes bathroom glass opaque the moment the door closes.
