The Sketch Guide

Real stone, real variation. Every sheet is cut from natural quarried stone, so colour, veining and texture vary from sheet to sheet and from batch to batch — photos and samples show the character of the stone, not an exact match. Order the full quantity for your project together so it comes from the same batch. Read more in our FAQ

Flexible Stone Panels — Real Natural Stone Veneer That Bends, Cuts and Sticks

Sketch Flexible Stone is a thin layer of genuine quarried slate, marble, sandstone or travertine — around 1 to 2 mm of real stone — bonded to a flexible backing. The result is a full-size stone sheet that weighs a fraction of traditional cladding, bends around curves and columns, cuts with ordinary tools and fixes with construction adhesive. Every face is natural stone, so no two sheets are the same.

This is the range Sketch Australia is best known for, and it is the one you will find on feature walls, facades, fireplaces, bathrooms, kitchens, commercial fit-outs and caravan interiors across the country. Browse the full range below, or jump straight to a finish: Slate, Marble, Sandstone, Concrete, Translucent (backlit) stone, Liquid Rust and Peel & Stick.

What makes flexible stone different from stone cladding

Traditional stone cladding is 20 to 50 mm thick, weighs 30 to 60 kg per square metre, needs mechanical fixing and often engineering sign-off. A standard Sketch flexible stone sheet is 2700 × 1220 mm and weighs roughly 1.5 kg, so a single person can carry, cut and fit it. It goes directly over plasterboard, render, brick, tile or cement sheet with standard adhesive — no stonemason, no wet trades, no structural upgrade.

Because the stone layer is thin and the backing is flexible, the sheets wrap around curved walls, columns, bulkheads and furniture. They are light enough for ceilings, doors and joinery fronts where solid stone was never an option. For the full comparison read our stone cladding guide for Australia.

Where flexible stone panels are used

Interior feature walls — living rooms, bedheads, hallways and stair voids where a single large sheet gives a seamless stone face with minimal joints.

Bathrooms and kitchens — splashbacks, vanity walls, shower surrounds and island fronts. The panels are waterproof once sealed at the edges and resist steam and splashing.

Exteriors and facades — entry walls, garage surrounds, outdoor kitchens, fences and whole facades. The stone is UV-stable and the backing is weather-resistant; see the exterior gallery for finished projects.

Fireplaces and TV walls — thin stone sits flat behind a mounted TV or around a fireplace surround without eating into room depth.

Commercial and hospitality — reception walls, retail fit-outs, cafes, hotel rooms and backlit bars using our translucent stone range.

Caravans, boats and joinery — the low weight and flexibility make it one of the few real-stone finishes suitable for mobile and curved applications.

Why choose Sketch flexible stone

Real natural stone — every sheet is unique, unlike faux, printed or PU panels. Lightweight at roughly 1.5 kg per standard sheet versus 30 to 60 kg per square metre for traditional cladding. Flexible backing bends around columns, curves and corners. Installs with adhesive over most sound substrates in a day, not a week. Large 2700 × 1220 mm format means fewer joints and a more seamless wall. Over 60 finishes across slate, marble, sandstone, concrete and translucent stone. Backed by Sketch Australia's test reports and fire performance documentation, and available to see and touch at our showrooms in Cranbourne West and Sunshine North (Melbourne) and Castle Hill (Sydney).

How to order

Start with a sample pack so you can check the colour and texture in your own light. Measure your wall and allow around 10 per cent for cuts and pattern matching. Order the full quantity in one go so every sheet comes from the same batch, then follow the installation guide or ask us about recommended installers in Melbourne and Sydney. Delivery is Australia-wide.

Flexible Stone Panel FAQs

Is flexible stone real stone?

Yes. Each sheet carries a genuine layer of natural slate, marble, sandstone or travertine taken from the quarry block. The colour, veining and texture come from the stone itself, not from a print or a mould, which is why sheets vary from one to the next.

How thick and how heavy are the sheets?

The stone layer is about 1 to 2 mm and the total sheet is a few millimetres thick. A standard 2700 × 1220 mm sheet weighs roughly 1.5 kg, so it can be handled, cut and fitted by one person without lifting equipment.

Can flexible stone be used outside or in wet areas?

Yes. The panels are used on facades, exterior feature walls, outdoor kitchens, bathrooms and shower surrounds across Australia. Seal the edges and joints in wet areas and follow the installation guide for exterior substrates.

How do I install flexible stone panels?

Cut the sheet with an angle grinder or a heavy-duty knife, apply a flexible construction adhesive to a clean, sound substrate, press the sheet into place and seal the joints. Most DIYers manage a feature wall in a day. See the installation guide for substrate preparation, adhesive and sealing details.

Can the sheets bend around curves and corners?

Yes. The flexible backing lets the sheet follow curved walls, columns and bulkheads. Ask us about the tightest radius for the finish you have chosen before ordering for a curved wall.

Which finishes are available?

More than 60 finishes across slate, marble, sandstone, concrete, translucent and liquid rust, plus a peel and stick range for smaller jobs. Order a sample pack to compare finishes before you commit.

How does flexible stone compare with stacked stone or stone cladding?

Stacked stone and traditional cladding give a heavier, more three-dimensional look but need mechanical fixing, a stronger substrate and a stonemason. Flexible stone gives the same natural face in a large, light, adhesive-fixed sheet at a lower installed cost. Our stone cladding guide sets out the differences in detail.

Do you deliver Australia-wide?

Yes. Sheets ship from Melbourne to every state, and you can collect from or view the range at our Melbourne and Sydney showrooms.
